Timely Tips

Never-Too-Late Spring Cleaning

Get your pond ready for the season with these simple steps.

1. Remove Bottom Debris

Scoop out leaves, twigs, and sludge—even if the pond was covered over winter.

2. Check the Pond

Inspect the liner, pump, filter, and tubing for damage or leaks.

3. Refresh the Water

Remove and replace only part of the water to avoid upsetting the pond's natural balance.

4. Divide Water Plants

Spring is the best time to divide and repot water lilies, iris, pickerel rush, and other spreading plants. But if they are completely overgrowing their containers, do it anytime before fall.

5. Give Plants Room

Trim crowded roots and reposition plants so they can grow horizontally without pressing against the pot.

6. Restart the System

Clean the pump and filter, then return them to the pond and begin circulating the water.

"A little spring attention helps prevent algae, supports healthier plants, and keeps the pond looking its best all season."

Note: I just finished cleaning my pond July 31, so you can still do this.
